Welcome to The Hearth
The Hearth is the new home for my ongoing somatic mindfulness classes: a place to gather in community, sustain a regular practice, and have access to a growing library of teachings and practices to support you along the way.
Organized in seasonal memberships, The Hearth offers a steady weekly rhythm of meditation, somatic practice and community connection. Each Wednesday we gather for an hour to arrive, reconnect with the body, work directly with what is present, and strengthen the capacities that help us meet our lives with greater awareness, steadiness and choice.
There is no curriculum to keep up with and nothing you need to complete. You can join us at the beginning of a season or step into The Hearth at any point along the way. Come live when you can, use the recordings when you can't, and draw from the practice library as desired.
You do not need an established meditation practice to participate. These practices are offered with choice and curiosity, with room to work with your own body, nervous system and capacity.
Autumn at The Hearth
Throughout the autumn we will move between foundational somatic mindfulness and two deeper streams of practice.
Mindfulness & Spell Breaking
Drawing from Buddhist understandings of the ways the mind becomes caught in habitual patterns of thought, perception and reaction, we'll explore how mindfulness can help us recognize the trances we repeatedly fall into, such as rumination, reactivity, self-criticism, or catastrophizing, and begin to interrupt these patterns without making an enemy of the mind.
The Brahma Vihāras: Practices for Nourishing Resilience
We'll also spend time with the classical Buddhist practices known as the Brahma Vihāras: qualities of heart that can be deliberately cultivated and strengthened through practice. Through loving-kindness, compassion, appreciative joy and equanimity, we will explore a dimension of resilience that is not simply about how well we withstand difficulty, but about nourishing the qualities that help us remain connected to ourselves, one another and the world.
Foundations of Somatic Mindfulness
Running underneath the entire season will be the foundational practices that have shaped my teaching for many years: grounding and orienting, embodied awareness, recognizing resources and support, working skilfully with activation and overwhelm, listening to the body's signals, and developing our capacity to stay present with experience without becoming consumed by it.
